A Family Pet?

Why does it seem like most people are afraid of owning a pit bull? I feel like it is the one breed of dog that people are reluctant to accept as a house pet. The reason that pit bulls get a negative wrap has more to do with how the dog was raised, than the dog itself. A pit bull is a very intelligent dog that needs to be properly trained to be a good house pet. I used to own a pit bull and it was one of the most loyal pets I've ever had. This breed gets a bad wrap from the media because of people like Michael Vick that transform these animals into killing machines. Pit bulls are people oriented dogs that are eager to please.

I like to compare a pit bull pup to a young child because they are both very impressionable. The child and the dog are intelligent, but need to be trained to function around others. I know I shouldn't compare a kid to a dog, but both will respond to how you raise them. If a pit bull has a normal person raise them, they are just as good of a dog as a lab. People need to realize that pit bulls would rather jump on you and lick you, instead of attack you. Another reason that makes a pit bull a great family pet is their high tolerance for pain. Stay with me here, most kids like to play rough especially when it comes to animals. Pit bulls enjoy horsing around without reacting negatively.

I feel like people need to take a step back and reassess how they feel about this breed. The modern breeders are breeding pit bulls to be family companions instead of breeding them to be hunting dogs. It seems like people see a pit bull and instantly think about the way that the media portrays this breed. I hate that some place have banned this breed because they view it as a dangerous breed. As I've said before this breed is only dangerous if it is not properly trained. If you put the time and effort in, then a pit bull will become your family's best friend. This dog is a terrific family pet and has been categorized as a heartless killing machine.

  1. I agree with what you are saying. I used to be terrified of pit bulls just because of the bad stories I heard about them, especially from the media. I have only ever interacted with one female pit bull who was very gentle and seemed like a great pet.I am still a little apprehensive about this breed, but only because of the bad reputation they have. I agree with you that this is not fair.

  2. I couldn't agree more. I have two pit bulls, one is a 5 year old male and the other is a 7 month old female puppy. I also have a 6 year old pug. The pits are obviously much more active than the pug, especially the puppy, but they are by no means dangerous. They are the sweetest dogs ever, and even snuggle up with the pug and our 1 year old kitten at night. I definitely agree that if the owner brings the dog up to be dangerous, it will be. But that applies to other large dogs as well, such as rottweilers.

  3. The idiom is "bum rap", or "bad rap". See http://shadesbreath.hubpages.com/hub/Is-it-Bad-Rap-or-Bad-Wrap .

In an amusing case of serendipity, the first google result when searching "bad rap" is for www.badrap.org .
