The Final Straw

For the past three years I have worked at a daycare in my town and over that amount of time there have been instances that have occurred that should have promoted change and nothing was done. Well I have had it, I love my job but things need to change there soon or someone is going to get hurt. (I cannot disclose the name of the daycare or of the people that will be mentioned in the following for confidentiality reasons). There have been theft, break-ins, vandalism on the property, and now workers cars have been vandalized off the daycare property as well.

The first year I started working there I was a senior in high school. It was my first real job and I loved working with the children. A few months into my new job we had an event where all the parents came hand had a family snack with their child and all the other families that go to the daycare on the playgrounds. Once all the families had left I finished setting up the classroom for the next day and went to grab my bag out of the teacher cabinet in the room I was working in. I looked into my wallet and saw that 50 dollars was stolen from me. I reported it to my boss and apparently I was not the only one that had money stolen from them. I thought it was odd that someone would steel money and especially on family snack day, but then it dawned on me that it was the perfect day to go steel money from people's wallets because everyone was outside on the playgrounds and no one was in the class rooms.

Then over the next two years more money here and there was stolen from people. It didn't happen to me again though because I was smart enough to leave my stuff from then on in a safe place in my car. Around Christmas time there were a few break-ins into the daycare where things would randomly go missing and there would also be random bags left behind by the thief with stuff packed in it like you would take for an overnight at someone's house. Also, this person or persons would break things and hide them in the weirdest places like in the children's dress up and play kitchen areas, which is dangerous because for the kids to find and get their hands on. The two most recent things that have occurred are last month there were break-ins and security issues and last night there were car vandalism's of the cars of people who work at the daycare. Mine and three other employees’ cars were victims of drive by attacks late at night. These attacks consisted of someone shooting a BB gun at the back windshield of my car and it shattered into a million pieces and the same for the other employees’ cars.

The police have been informed about all of these instances as they occur but no one has been caught. Also, I think it's about time to get a freaking security system with cameras set up around the daycare. We recently got a new boss that was informed about these issues and she hasn't done anything to aid the problem. This person or group of people needs to be caught and penalized because of everything they have caused. I think it is high time there be something done because it has gone so far that employees are being attacked at their own homes. If something isn't done soon then the next thing to happen may end up with one or more of the employees getting hurt! I want to feel safe at work again, is putting in a security system with cameras too much to ask?

  1. I must say that sucks. The break-in's need to stop. It is important for employees to feel safe at work and it is very bad your boss let it get to the point where it effects your home life. Not only should the workers be safe, but the children as well. Your boss shouldn't think twice when it comes to the security camera, no matter how much the cost. Her employees are now a target. I hope she doesn't let the children become a target for this criminal.

  2. I also work at a daycare and have found myself complaining about things there from time to time. After reading your post, however, I realize that my complaints are nothing compared to yours. I have never had money stolen or had to worry about my security or the children's. I cannot believe this center has allowed this situation to happen without making any changes. Having people continually break into a place that is meant to protect children is absolutely ridiculous. Something must be done because one does not know if the criminals can turn violent and hurt one of the workers or children. I think that you should talk to the other employees and, as a united front, go to your new boss and demand that something change. You should not have to work in an unsafe environment and parents should feel confident leaving their children in a safe daycare and this is certainly not a safe place for children.
