One and Done

Every year around this time marks the start of the college basketball season, where some of the best young basketball players in the world will start the journey to the NBA. Most of these top college players that are making their dream a reality by playing in the NBA don't go to college for more than one year, since the official rule is that you only need to stay a year before entering the draft. This leads to me the question of should college players even go to college, or should the rule be changed to two years before leaving?

Coming from personal experience, how much can you actually learn in one year of college? And also how much time do you have to put into study when you are playing basketball at a division 1 level? Both of these questions surround the NBA's rule of one and done. It wasn't too long when high school players could make the leap right into the NBA, but with the rule of one year of college that leap doesn't happen anymore. When looking at how much a college player will learn in his one year of college it can be compared to a person doing a fifth year at a preparatory school since the classes the player is taken are mostly general education. It's not until the second year of college when you start taking your major classes, so what is the point of a basketball player going to school for one year, rather than just going to the NBA.

On the other hand if the player was forced to stay for two years, then maybe some players would stay for their undergraduate degree since they are half through with obtaining it.  Having the player being forced to stay for 2 years would prompt more kids to stay or make want to leave depending on the type of the student they are.

When talking about the game of basketball its important to remember that this sport has one of the highest dropout rates because of how much the game is played and cared about more than school in the inter cites around America. In closing  most basketball players never care about what the school offers academically, rather who the school plays, how many fans they get, and who the school's official merchandiser is.

  1. They can pull a Brandon Jennings and play a year in Italy instead of waste a year in college and get paid for it.
