Frankly, I feel as if this is an overtired argument. We live in a commercialized society. It is unfortunate that so many feel obligated to spend thousands of dollars to show they that significant person in their life. For me, I do not feel obligated to get a person a gift that is worth hundreds of dollars and will wow them with impressive qualities. I get them something that I feel like they will appreciate and will convey just how special they are to me. Instead of whining about how commercialized we have become, which will get us nowhere and only reiterates what we all know to be true, others should focus on the benefits of Black Friday.
The idea of a commercialized society can be related to Black Friday because I honestly do not see the harm in waiting in a few lines to get something special for that certain someone. I was out there in the lines Thursday night, and I went with my best friend. We actually see the whole idea of Black Friday as a bonding experience, and we are both poor college students. Securing that deal is satisfying and often comes as a relief to our barren wallets. Yes, there are people who take it to the extreme and push, shove, and even stab people for a crazy deal. However, there are also people who rob banks, murder people, and launder money. People who participate in stupid actions are everywhere. We cannot let them define every Black Friday shopping experience.
Yes, we live in a commercialized society where people feel obligated to buy gifts for those they love. However, crying about that is not going to change it. We are evolving, and maybe it is not for the better. We need to learn that if we cannot beat 'em, we need to join 'em. The people who are so adamant that Black Friday is the antichrist and that we should all sit around and hold hands and be thankful are living in a dream world. They are also missing out on a fun day where you can potentially save money and purchase something that reminds that special person you are thinking about them. There is time to be thankful and snag a great deal. I did it, after all. And guess what? I did not shove, push or stab anyone either.
I see your point. Although there are some people who take Black Friday to the extreme, I do not see the day as negative. I worked at Toys R Us on Black Friday midnight until 1030 AM. The people there were actually very sweet, we handed out "goodie bags" to the first 200 customers and they were patient and didn't shove anyone. Many customers were sympathetic towards my coworkers and I for working so early and so long.
ReplyDeleteI definitely see your point about saving money. As college students we are usually pretty broke, and these deals are helpful. I'm just a baby for the cold and refuse to freeze for them!
I do not see anything wrong with Black Friday, especially in this economy. As long as people are somewhat polite and not violent, this is a great way for customers to get deals and stores to start making their holiday profit. I personally have never taken part in Black Friday shopping as I am usually skiing in the White Mountains where there are no retail stores nearby, but I am thinking about going out next year. This is a day to get great deals and save a ton of money, so why not?
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. I think that Black Friday gets a bad rap because of the nature of 'holiday.' The fact that it comes the day after giving thanks for what one already has adds to the notion that is some sort of evil. I do not believe that Christmas should be measured by he amount of gifts one receives or the amount of money spent on them but I do not see anything wrong with saving money on products. People should be able to save money on big ticket items that they would otherwise not be able to afford. If that means that they are willing to stand in line for hours after Thanksgiving to do so than I do no see the problem. The decision is up to them. I, for one, choose to stay in the comfort of my own home eating left overs in my pajamas because I am crazy enough to pay full price for things. While Black Friday is not everyone, myself included, I do not think it is an evil that is plaguing our society. Being able to save money on things is a good thing especially in today's economy.
